On April 24th-25th in San Diego 500 kids ages 6-18 competed at the Trampoline and Tumbling State Championships. From Anti-Gravity Sports Complex in Valencia seven kids earned medals in trampoline, power tumbling, and the double mini while competing at various levels.
13-year-old Morgan Sullivan smiles and with humble excitement exclaims, "I guess I'm a state champion!" She earned first place in her division in the state in the double mini. The double mini is an event in which the athlete runs toward a small trampoline, mounts with a bounce, executes a trick, and then dismounts with another trick, all while avoiding a red line that is painted into the trampoline. Three judges each give a score, with a ten being perfect, according to their evaluation of the athlete's ability to stick the landing, perform a difficult move cleanly, and to avoid the middle red line. Sullivan says, "It's a lot harder than it looks!"
Teammates Natalie Giambalvo, Ryann Georgio, Lauren Dickerson, Jordyn Byers, and Kristen Bungee all placed within the top eight in each of the events they participated in. They are working hard at each competition to advance to the next level, which is accomplished by scoring an eight or better in each event. Georgio says, "I like the challenge that competitions are, to see how I'm progressing."
An incredibly athletic tumbler, soft-spoken 12-year-old Josh Shimanovsky has reached the highest level possible (level 10) and earned 2nd place at the State Championships in trampoline, power tumbling, and the double mini.
The next competition for this explosive little team from Anti-Gravity is the Nationals in July in Florida. But when asked what their goals are they all say, "I want to make it to the Olympics!"
Anti-Gravity Sports Complex will be having trampoline team tryouts for ages 6-18 on Saturday, May 29th from 2-4 p.m. The cost is $10.00 and no experience is necessary.
